Name: Agate comes from the Sicilian river Achates. Agate is a banded chalcedony. sometimes containing opal substance. The individual bands can be multi-colored, or more or less of the same color. Colors range from red, pink and brown to blue, grey and white and are due to various impurities. Because of the many different appearances the stone has been given different names, such as: Layer agate, Eye agate, Moss agate, Scenic agate, Sard stone, Brecciated agate and others.
